MEATY History

In many ways, Hagberg’s is the familiar story of a small town meat market. But Hagberg’s is more than just a small town meat market. Much more.

Hagberg’s, “The Meat Place” has been a member of the Lake Elmo family of businesses since 1938. Billy and Melissa Hagberg operate the store that Billy’s grandparents, Ray and Olga, purchased nearly a century ago. In 1972, Billy’s parents, Bill and Pat moved the store from Main Street in Lake Elmo to it’s current location on bustling Highway 5. Nestled along side a farmer’s field, it’s a fitting location for the fresh meats and produce that has made Hagberg’s a community main stay.

Over time, Hagberg’s evolved to better serve the community from adding gas pumps to locally sourcing and selling a nice selection fresh produce, baked goods, and other grocery items. But, at their heart is meat. Hagberg’s has become the premier destination in the area and points beyond for their selection and exceptional quality of distinctive and expertly prepared meats.

The moment customers walk through the door all five senses are on high alert. They’re greeted with bustling energy, welcoming smiles, the vibrant colors and textures of fresh foods, and deliciously smoky aromas wafting over the meat counter. In an instant, they know that Hagberg’s is more than a typical butcher shop and market. Much more. We love meat, and it shows. Our meat counter is packed (and by packed, we mean jammed) with the area’s largest selection of fresh meat and unique combinations prepared on site by our own third generation expert meatatarian – Billy Hagberg.

There are other butcher shops around, but none of them have been in the community as long as Hagberg’s and none of them offer the knowledge and passion that three generations of local meatatarians bring to the table. And Hagberg’s reputation extends beyond the confines of Lake Elmo. Anyone who’s made Hagberg’s a stop along their travels takes the Hagberg’s story and love of meat with them. And many return from near and far for flavors they just can’t replicate anywhere else.

From meat knowledge to genuine service, and sometimes a bad joke, the local staff knows how to make customers feel at home – just as they should in a hometown meat market.

Our customers love us because they know they can count on Hagberg’s for the best of everything – from the exceptional quality of the meats and foods (many of which are locally sourced) to the local color and genuine pride and service of our staff.

Or, as we like to say, if you love meat, you’ll really love Hagberg’s for an amazing meat and shopping experience – every time.
